CBD Oil for Dogs – Everything You Need to Know

April 3, 2020

When it comes to CBD and its potential therapeutic properties, there is a lot of misinformation floating around the internet, mainly because people pick up information from various questionable sources. It’s good to diversify your sources, but it’s also important to pay attention to the credibility of the said sources. Otherwise, you’ll likely end up picking up wrong pieces of information. This is especially true when it comes to the subject of giving your dog CBD.

Since it’s still under scrutiny and there is a ton of research being done, CBD is yet to be FDA approved. This means there is no peer reviewed tested evidence about its properties. However, many people who have tried it said that it helped them overcome some of the accompanying symptoms of their condition. Similarly, many people have reported that their pets have also shown signs of improvement after taking CBD.

So, can you give CBD oil to dogs? What’s the worst that can happen? If you’re looking for answers join us on this journey, and we’ll try to break down both the advantages and shortcomings of giving your pet CBD oil.

What Is CBD?

Before we touch on the subject of giving it to pets, it’s a good idea to briefly cover the definition of CBD. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring chemical compound that can be found in the cannabis plant. It does not have psychoactive properties, meaning it does not induce a high. It is becoming more and more popular in the last couple of years, mainly because it can potentially help alleviate some of the issues tied to symptoms of insomnia, pain, and anxiety. You can learn a lot more about CBD in some of the other blogs here at Peak City CBD.

What Is CBD

What Does CBD do for Dogs?

Now that you’re somewhat familiar with CBD, it’s time to cover some of the underlying questions. In particular, about its effect on animals, specifically dogs.

The first thing we need to address is the difference between CBD for humans and CBD for dogs. Fortunately, there’s a pretty simple explanation – there is very little to no difference at all. The only difference is in the dosage and, in some cases, the flavor. Other than that, everything else is more or less the same.

CBD for dogs has the potential to mitigate the following issues:

Pain

Older dogs are known to be susceptible to arthritis in the later stages of their life. As you can assume, it’s probably one of the worst things that can happen to an animal who is continuously active, playful, and on the move.

Some recent studies have shown that CBD can provide significant pain relief in dogs with arthritis. The results can and will vary, but it’s relatively safe to say that CBD is beneficial for dogs that struggle with pain.

Seizures

Out of all possible applications of CBD, its application for seizures has been studied the most (in human trials). Since dogs have shown very similar reactions to CBD as humans we expect to have the same or similar effect on animals.

In fact, Epidiolex, a CBD product that treats two rare forms of epilepsy, is currently the only one approved by the FDA. So, there is some evidence of CBD’s positive effect on conditions that cause seizures.

Anxiety Reduction

Since it has shown somewhat good results in humans, dogs should in theory, benefit from it too. There are some great testimonials on the Peak City CBD website about Pet CBD.

The idea behind this is pretty simple – since CBD is known to have the potential to reduce inflammation and pain, it could reduce anxiety too. CBD is more like a supplement rather than a cure. In fact, it’s important to point out that CBD is not intended to diagnose or cure a particular condition, but rather alleviate its symptoms.

How Much CBD Oil Should I Give to My Dog?

Proper dosage is a critical aspect of the whole equation. It is something that can either make or break your pet’s experience.

While there is a somewhat standardized chart of the recommended dosage, it’s more or less a set of guidelines. In most cases, you will have to monitor your dog’s behavior and fine-tune the dosage gradually.

With that being said, the general rule of thumb for starting doses is 1mg of CBD per 10 pounds of weight, twice a day. In other words, if you have a dog that weighs 10 pounds, the dose is a 10mg twice a day. What 10mg is, depends on the oi you purchase and the strength. At Peak City CBD, 10mg would be a full dropper of the 250mg CBD oil. If it’s your first time dealing with droppers and CBD, bear in mind that the term full dropper doesn’t mean that the liquid goes all the way to the top of the dropper. In most cases, 1ml is about 80%+ of the dropper. Our Peak City CBD droppers are calibrated, so it is easy to know how much to take!

In case you don’t see any results while following this formula, feel free to increase the dosage after about two weeks. However, make sure you do it gradually.

If you’re wondering how to give CBD oil to dogs, there are a couple of methods you can resort to. The most efficient way is to put the dropper in the dog’s mouth directly and administer CBD. However, if you’re unable to administer CBD this way for some reason, put it on a treat or mix it with something tasty like peanut butter or even add it to their normal food bowl.

Whichever method you opt for, the effects will be the same. So, it’s more a question of convenience than efficiency.

Potential Side-Effects and Risks

While CBD is still under research, we have a somewhat vague idea of what could go wrong. Fortunately, the side-effects and risks are relatively mild.  As long as you stick with correct dosages and quality products, your furry friend should be fine.

In some rare cases, CBD can cause drowsiness and diarrhea. It can also decrease the production of saliva, meaning you could see a slight increase in thirst.

It is always advisable to start with smaller dosages in order to prevent any of side-effects from happening.
