Many people find traveling to be a stressful and discomforting experience, especially if they aren’t frequent travelers. For years, people have been using sedatives and sleeping pills in order to cope with anxiety during their trip. However, that kind of coping can have serious side-effects and consequences. CBD is known for its calming effect and it’s becoming more and more popular in the past couple of years. CBD is becoming popular since hemp-derived products became legal through Farm Bill 2018. Many travelers have turned their focus toward CBD instead of traditional sedatives. Many of them said that it’s probably one of the best decisions they made. While all of this sounds pretty simple and straightforward, there is much more to it than meets the eye. Even though hemp-derived products are legal on a federal level, some states have specific laws that could put you in trouble for possession of CBD. This guide is designed to give you a deeper insight into the do’s and don’ts of traveling with CBD.
What Is CBD?
Many people use CBD, THC, marijuana, and hemp interchangeably, which is why it’s important to put these misconceptions to rest once and for all. Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a naturally-occurring chemical compound that can be found in the cannabis plant. It’s the second most abundant active ingredient of cannabis, with THC being the most prevalent one. However, unlike THC, CBD does not have psychoactive properties, meaning it won’t make you “high.” It is believed that CBD has strong therapeutic properties, but it’s still not sufficiently researched.
Can You Fly With CBD Oil?
If you’re a frequent flier, chances are you’ve thought about traveling with CBD. Many people are sick and tired of taking Ambien or Xanax because of their side effects and overaction. In other words, these short-acting sedatives tend to make one groggy for hours. CBD, on the other hand, does not! Currently, the TSA includes medical marijuana on the list of prohibited substances. In other words, passengers cannot take medical marijuana through security and onto a plane. Hemp was reclassified in 2018 and the TSA made an exception for hemp-derived products. It is no longer considered a controlled substance. Hemp-based CBD products are legal under federal law and are allowed on a plane!
If you’re planning on flying with CBD oil, make sure you bring hemp-derived CBD oil with less than 0.3% THC. You won’t be allowed to board the plane with anything higher than 0.3% THC. The best way to ensure that you’re doing things right is to visit TSA’s official website and read through their rules.
Suggestions to Make Traveling with CBD Less Stressful
Now that we’ve touched on legislation and rules, it’s time to focus on some things we believe you should do before going to the airport and traveling with CBD.
Get Familiar With the Laws
As we’ve mentioned, CBD is legal under federal law, but there are states that don’t allow CBD at all, or they have decriminalized it rather than completely legalize it. The best way for you to avoid awkward scenarios is to put some time into reading the laws of the state you’re traveling to.
Have Your COA With You
COA stands for Certificate of Analysis, and it’s an important document that proves the authenticity of your CBD oil, and on top of that, contains all the necessary information that you may need in order to bring your oil aboard. Some companies have these certificates available on their website, but if that’s not the case, feel free to ask for it, and they will provide it. Print it out, bring it with you to the airport, and that should be sufficient for TSA approval.
Don’t Hide Your Oil
There is no reason to smuggle CBD oil through TSA control because they will eventually find it! This will no doubt cause you a lot of trouble. Pack your CBD oil with the rest of the liquids you’re carrying (shampoos, balms, lotions). Don’t be afraid to be upfront about bringing your CBD with TSA agents. If asked, show them the COA and your doctor’s note if you have one.
It’s important to remember that none of the above guarantees that you’ll be allowed to bring your oil aboard, but it definitely helps a lot. If you do everything right, TSA agents will let you through in 99% of cases.
Traveling to Different Countries
If you’re from the U.S. and are traveling to another country, you should thoroughly read the regulations and laws of that particular country. If you are traveling internationally, you will need to carefully check the rules on traveling with CBD. Since only a few milliliters of CBD oil can ruin your whole vacation or business trip, it’s probably not worth the risk. Ultimately, you can always buy a small bottle of CBD oil in that particular country, as long as it’s legal. Once the time comes to fly back home, leave that batch of CBD oil behind instead of taking unnecessary risks.
How Does CBD Help?
There is a strong body of evidence behind CBD’s potential therapeutic benefits. This is especially true when it comes to its calming effect. As we’ve mentioned, CBD could be a great alternative to strong medications such as Xanax because it doesn’t have as strong of an impact on one’s motor functions. Furthermore, its effects don’t last as long. It is important to point out that CBD oil is NOT intended to cure or treat severe conditions, but rather mitigate the symptoms of said conditions. So, if you’re currently undergoing therapy and taking strong medications, DON’T substitute them with CBD. Using CBD alongside your prescribed drugs is usually safe. But make sure to consult a physician before adding any supplements to your existing therapy.
So, is it legal to fly with CBD oil? Can you travel with CBD oil in the U.S.? The short answer is – yes, in most cases. However, before you go to the airport, make sure you do some research in order to avoid unpleasant scenarios. In case you don’t have time to read about the legislations behind CBD oil, it’s probably best that you leave your bottle at home.
